Risk and uncertainty can be difficult concepts to convey. To engage the public meaningfully, IPUR explores innovative methods of risk communication.
Art is a powerful medium which can engage the audience deeply. The Institute appointed Dr Pablo Suarez as IPUR’s Artist-in-Residence and have supported various art events which can contribute to the public understanding of risk.

Visualising data science through art, “RiskTalk” is a sculpture commissioned by IPUR in 2019 to articulate 200 years worth of narratives around the world. More about the data sculpture here.

Over the years, IPUR has launched a series of data visualisation competition called Optigram, aimed at developing creative ways to communicate data and information on risk effectively. In 2021, with the theme of Climate Change in Asia, our winners developed interactive platforms with the objective of getting people to be more mindful of their carbon footprint.

Check out their interactive projects here.

IPUR previously partnered with Singapore Polytechnic and worked with students from the Media, Arts & Design School to develop board games which convey concepts of risk, uncertainty and decision-making. Over five months, more than 60 students were involved in the conceptualisation and development of original board games.
IPUR frequently organises events aimed at building capacity and educating the public on risk issues. Since 2017, nearly 10,000 people have attended our public seminars and conferences.

One of IPUR’s signature events is The Risk Quotient conference. The annual conference, jointly organised by the Institute and our partners, aims to enhance public dialogue on risk issues in Asia and the world. The first two editions of The Risk Quotient were held in Japan (2018), China (2019) and Korea (2020).

The Institute co-hosted the 2021 Understanding Risk Asia Conference alongside The World Bank. More than 1,000 virtual participants from about 50 countries attended the conference which featured 31 sessions and about 100 speakers.
