Optigram 2021: Reducing our carbon footprint

10 August 2021

Congratulations to the 4 teams that won this year’s “Optigram 2021: Climate Change in Asia“!

The teams this year were asked to submit proposals for a digital media product (e.g. artwork, videos, website) which visualises scientific data creatively to communicate risks, patterns and trends (e.g. how risk perceptions emerge and evolve).

The winning teams were:

  1. Team A – Premakumar Ganesh, Raphael Roshan Joseph and Ebenezer Denzel Shemaiah
  2. Team B – He Shiying and New Jun Jie
  3. Team C – Leong Enwei, Tan Lijie Yuki and Leong Wei Jie Wellace

Each of these 3 teams will collect data and focus on three separate areas in carbon emissions:

  1. Transportation (Team C)
  2. Food choices (Team A)
  3. Household appliances (Team B)

The teams will also be using different interactive platforms, namely a quiz, article and video, to showcase practical steps everyone can take to reduce their carbon footprint. (Update: Check out some of the team’s products here and here.)

Another winning proposal belonged to Nguyen Thuy Duong (Anita), who proposed a Climate Mandala browser-based colour-by-number game. Her proposed product would have taken the form of a dot mandala picture, visualising the number of deaths from causes linked to climate change in Asia, such as coastal flood, dengue or undernutrition.
