It is with profound sadness that the Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk (IPUR) has learnt about the passing of Pablo Suarez, artist-in-residence at IPUR.
Pablo Suarez was a one of a kind communicator. What some may have found boring or simplistic, he could ignite and imbue with excitement. What others would feel was too complicated to communicate, he would turn into something eye-catching and engaging.
His application of out-of-the-box thinking and creativity to communicate risks was instrumental in numerous projects with IPUR. From producing a batik sculpture to enhance people’s understanding of relevant risks, to working with practitioners from different disciplines to blend science and data with art, Pablo had a way to capture people’s imagination and make them think about issues in a different light.
Earlier this year, he took time to contribute a lecture for the IPUR’s online risk communication course where he shared about his work utilising unique forms of art such as acrobatics, sculptures and humour to communicate risks.
Pablo was a dear friend to the IPUR team and a joy to work with. He will be fondly remembered for many things, not least his kindness, his enthusiasm and his smile.
Rest in peace Pablo.
