Singapore’s road to Net Zero: Individual actions matter
IPUR embarked on a study with the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) and Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (LKYCIC) at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) to understand Singaporeans’ attitudes towards the nation’s Net Zero targets and its associated policies, as well as the actions they intend to take to support the Net Zero 2050 target. Findings from the study were presented to the Minister of Sustainability and Environment in April 2024 and the joint report was launched on 15 May 2024 at an event attended by about 130 people including decision-makers, academics, civil servants and members of the media.
The report found that Singaporeans want to support the national target to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050. This was despite the current low levels of awareness where only 15% of the respondents knew of the national commitment. However when provided with information about Singapore’s goal, 65% of respondents from a recently completed survey expressed support for Singapore’s target, with an additional 17% saying they support a more ambitious timeline. Read more about the key findings here.
To complement findings from the report, IPUR also developed a How-to-Guide to equip individuals with the right know-how on things they should know and do to reduce their carbon footprint. The guide was shared to all attendees of the 15 May event and serves as a simple yet informative document to support individuals in adapting their daily lifestyle habits to better align not only with Singapore’s Net Zero ambitions but globally as well. In the guide, readers will find information about the best courses of action to reach Net Zero including transportation and lifestyle choices, consumption habits and energy use. The information is supported with data and evidence and each section ends with a list of actions that individuals can adopt to reduce their carbon footprint.
