Multiple roles of individuals for climate action

9 June 2025

We had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Sam Hampton to give a keynote at a recent research collaboration workshop on individual climate action. He posed the question: Are individuals more responsible in taking climate action or is it down to systemic-level changes to spur on the individual? And in response noted the way climate problems are framed can lead to different solutions and have very different implications for individual behaviour.

One insight he shared was that people are in favour of climate action and often underestimate the willingness of others to take similar actions. He offered a simple but effective framework for green choices and highlighted how the multiple roles of individuals (consumer, investor, citizen, role model etc) can be capitalised on to trigger effective climate action.

Joining us the workshop were collaborators interested and working in the same environmental space including those from academia, government agencies and non-profit organisations.
